Chapter 10

“COME IN,” DELOS CALLED.

I turned to Connor, who’d walked me over to Delos’s office.

“I’ll miss your face,” I told him and brushed my lips across his, very glad I could see that full, gorgeous mouth again.

Somehow, when he’d reappeared, all of his wounds and bruises from his fight with Rick were gone. Xander thought it might have been a side effect of the invisibility, but Connor had thought sexual healing at me with a wink and lascivious smirk. Yep, so glad I could see that mouth again.

Later that afternoon, Xander had phoned Delos, and Delos had said he’d wanted to speak with me. So here we were.

Connor pulled me in for another kiss. “I’ll wait for you on the bench outside.”

“Okay. I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. I swept my gaze over the artifacts on the shelves behind Delos’s desk before I settled on him. “You wanted to talk to me?”

He nodded. “I did. Won’t you have a seat?”

I sat in the chair across from him.

“I wanted to talk to you about what I said whilst under the truth spell.”

Oh yeah. That little confession. My heart squeezed as I remembered his words:

I never would’ve left your mother had I known she was pregnant with you, my child. Even if it meant the end of the Lifewell. Even if it meant the end of this universe. I would’ve stayed.

“Okay,” I said quietly.

What did it matter? What would it change?

Connor thought I should hear him out, though.

He’s your father, he’d said. You should try to have a relationship with him.

I’d wondered if he had some sort of feeling that I would need my father, but I didn’t ask.

“I loved your mother in a way I’d never experienced love before,” Delos said.

I drew in a sharp breath. I had not been expecting that.

“What we had was pure and true and...I was devastated when I found out she’d been unfaithful to me.”

“But she wasn’t,” I insisted.

“But she wasn’t,” he agreed with deep sadness in his eyes. “Which makes it all the more devastating.” He gave me a smile that could only be described as bittersweet. “You remind me so much of her.”

I snorted, though my chest ached at the thought of her. I loved my mom with my whole heart, and I would do anything to get her back, but yeah, she was a little bit of a hot mess and a lot a bit of a crackhead.

“She had her struggles,” Delos went on. “And she told me about them all. But the remarkable thing about your mother was that every single time she faltered, every time she relapsed, she never once gave up on herself. She could’ve wallowed, felt sorry for herself, surrendered to her demons, ran from them, but she fought them with everything she had. She always fought so hard to be the best version of herself.”

Tears filled my eyes. Yeah, he’d known my mom well.

Delos sniffed and lowered his gaze. “I have something for you.”

He opened his desk drawer and pulled out a velvet box.
